Erb’s Palsy is a serious birth injury that is usually caused by medical malpractice or obstetrical malpractice. Erb’s Palsy is a type of brachial plexus injury occurring in infants who were subject to excessive force applied to their head and necks during delivery. Erbs Palsy can occur during vaginal delivery and during Cesarean section delivery.
Most of the time, Erb’s Palsy results when the child is too large to fit through the birth canal during the delivery. Because the baby is too large, a event called shoulder dystocia prevents the delivery. If the doctor then pulls excessively on the baby’s head or twists the baby’s head he will cause injury to the nerves in the baby’s neck that supply the arm. When the nerves are stretched by the excessive force of the pulling or twisting, there is permanent impairment and disability in the baby’s arm.
It has been known for a long time that large babies are at a higher risk for Erb’s palsy than are average size babies. The causes of a large baby (referred to as a macrosomic baby or fetus) are gestational diabetes, obesity in the mother, gestational age of the fetus, and prolonged labor. When one of the known risk factors for Erb’s Palsy is present the obstetrician should be extra careful during the delivery, be prepared to use special maneuvers during delivery, and consider performing a C-section and have such a discussion with the parents.
Children with Erb’s Palsy have life long problems with movement of the arm and with the ability to grasp or to do fine motor tasks with the hand. Also, because the muscles do not develop normally the children may have a shortened arm with less muscle than the normal arm. Years of physical therapy and occupational therapy are needed to help these children. Sometimes surgery is recommended. As adults, those affected by Erb’s Palsy may experience lost income because they are not able to type or use a keyboard which can limit their employment opportunities.
