Cerebral Palsy is a type of brain damage caused by injuries to the brain occurring at or near the time a baby is born. The injury can occur due to lack of oxygen, physical trauma, or bleeding in the brain. The Cerebral Palsy injury involves the part of the brain that processes higher mental and cognitive functions, movement, and sensory function. A child with Cerebral Palsy can have impairments ranging from mild to catastrophic.
Lack of oxygen getting to the baby during the delivery period is one cause of Cerebral Palsy. For example, when the doctor orders that Pitocin, which is the name for oxytocin, be given to a woman in labor to speed the labor, sometimes the contractions can become too strong. When that happens the baby may be oxygen deprived for a sufficient amount of time to cause brain damage.
Cerebral Palsy patients may require life long medical, nursing and hospital care, specialized equipment and assistive devices. Cerebral Palsy patients may have learning disabilities. Many will be unemployable because of the brain injury suffered when an infant.
Sometimes the brain injury may not be diagnosed for months or years after the traumatic birth.
